Roger Starkey is the founder, owner, editor, publisher and primary writer for The Metro Independent (, a community newspaper serving the southwestern Illinois communities of Collinsville, Caseyville and Maryville. In one year, with an advertising budget of less than $500, Metro Independent monthly readership has topped 20,000 unique visitors and 200,000 page views.

Before launching a journalism career, Starkey had a successful information technology software consulting career that took him around the world, indulging his love of travel, but not his enthusiasm for writing. He left consulting in 2012 to obtain a degree in mass communications, with a focus on print and electronic journalism. He graduated summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2013.

Starkey covered local news, business, education and charity as a general assignment intern for the Belleville News-Democrat. He was a reporter, opinion editor and sports editor for the Alestle, the SIUE sponsored newspaper.

Starkey spent 15 years in information technology software consulting. He progressed to project management positions, often leading multiple teams on simultaneous projects. He lived in four foreign countries before settling in Collinsville, Ill.
